Working Principle of Direct Driven Air Compressor

The working principle of a direct drive air compressor is very simple. As the motor turns, it rotates two or more gears that in turn spin an even smaller gear inside the cylinder which compresses the gas into liquid form.
The piston and crankshaft assembly are also connected so they move together as one unit without any type of belt or pulley to get in the way.
This type air compressor can be used in painting, air tools, auto repair and nail gun.

Features of Direct Driven Air Compressor

Compact Design

Due to the removal of a belt-driven system, direct drive compressors have a compact and maintenance friendly design. They are therefore simple to install at site – Plug & Play units.

High Efficiency

Direct drive compressors come with direct transmission which almost eliminates drive loses, increasing output efficiency. The direct drive mechanism maximizes efficiency and minimizes energy loss allowing direct drive air compressors to carry out heavy -duty continuous demand applications with ease.

Low Maintenance

Direct drive compressors require less maintenance since they have fewer moving components. The direct drive technology also does away with the necessity for expensive and time-consuming belt maintenance and tensioning.

Withstand Harsh Environments

Direct drive compressors are suitable to operate within extreme environments and tough conditions. They are frequently used by industries like cement and metal, where they may be exposed to dust, debris, and extreme temperatures.

Advantages of Direct Driven Air Compressor

Compact and Lightweight

Direct drive air compressors are smaller and lighter compared to belt drive air compressors, making them portable and easy to move around.

Simple Maintenance

With fewer components, direct drive air compressors are generally easier to maintain and require less maintenance compared to belt drive air compressors.

Higher Efficiency

The direct connection between the motor and pump in a direct drive air compressor results in higher efficiency and better performance, as there are no energy losses due to belts or pulleys.

Cost-Effective

Direct drive air compressors are usually more affordable compared to belt drive air compressors, making them a budget-friendly option for DIYers or occasional users.

Constraints of Direct Driven Air Compressor
Air Compressor with Lubricating Oil

Loud Noise

The direct link between the electric motor and the compressor pump, while efficient, tends to turn up the volume — direct drive compressors are generally noisier than their belt driven counterparts.

Maintenance Cost

With fewer parts in the mix, a failure in one integral component can hit you harder in the wallet. Take, for example, a shaft seal at the connection points for the crankshaft — it’s a critical part of the direct drive compressor’s overall operation, and if it falters, the repair bill can climb.

Higher Initial Costs

Lastly, the upfront investment might give you a moment of pause. Direct drive compressors, designed to meet higher standards and endure diverse environments with fewer moving parts, often come with a steeper initial cost.

Installation of Direct Driven Air Compressor

Foundations
Direct Driven air compressors are supplied either with rubber feet or wheel mounted. The feet and wheel absorb vibration; the compressor must not be fixed rigidly to the floor and should be positioned on firm level ground.

Siting and Ventilation
Good access and headroom should be provided around the compressor for servicing. Adequate protection from the weather must also be provided. Good ventilation is vital, for maximum efficiency. Intake air should be as clean as possible. Air impurities, abrasive dust and corrosive gases are particularly harmful to the compressor.

Mains Connection
The direct driven arir compressor should be located as close to the mains supply as possible. Check that this supply is the same voltage as marked on the motor rating plate and that the wiring conforms in all respects to local regulations.

Voltage Drop
If the direct drive air compressor is moved a long way from the mains supply, the motor may appear to be sluggish, slow, buzz or unable to start. This is due to voltage drop caused by the extended lead to the compressor. This can be prevented, by increasing the size of the cable. Incorrect voltage at the motor will invalidate any guarantee.

Before Starting Check
That the direct driven compressor is correctly installed and that the supply voltage is correct and all fuses are correctly rated and intact. Also, that all maintenance checks have been carried out and the contents of the manual have been read and fully understood, by all appropriate persons.

Pressure Switch Starter Button
Most machines are fitted with a black pressure switch combining a STOP/START button on the top. In the 'UP' position the motor will start, in the 'DOWN' position the motor will stop and the switch will bleed the pump head. If it is necessary to stop the machine before the normal cut - out pressure is reached this button should be depressed to stop it.

Automatic Running
Once started your compressor stops and starts automatically. This is controlled by the pressure switch which is preset at the factory to stop the motor when the pressure in the tank reaches it's maximum working pressure and to automatically restart the motor when the pressure in the tank decreases to a predetermined pressure (about 35psi below maximum working pressure). If for some reason you want to stop the compressor, and immediately start again, the compressed air above the piston must be bled, to unload the compressor on start up.

Pressure Regulation
Your compressor may be fitted with a pressure regulator or combined air filter and pressure regulator. Simply turn the pressure control knob to adjust the outgoing pressure, clockwise to increase the pressure and anticlockwise to reduce it, the outlet pressure is shown on the regulator gauge.

Mini Reliable Air Compressor Direct Driven Type
2.2Kw Portable Dierct Driven Air Compressor

Breathable Air Warning
This compressor/pump is not equipped for, and should not be used to supply breathing quality air for any application of air for human consumption.

Overload protection
This compressor is fitted with an overload protection device. In the event that the motor becomes too hot, a thermal protection device will cut the mains supply to the motor. When the motor temperature returns to normal the mains supply will be restored automatically.

Extension Cords and Reels
In general, it is not recommended to use an extension lead. A longer air line is recommended as voltage drop on extension leads may lead to motor damage and will void warranty. If an extension cord must be used, for lengths up to 5 metres, an approved 15 amp rated cord must be used.

Do Not Abuse the Power Cord
Never yank or pull on the power cord to disconnect it from the mains supply socket. Never carry or drag your compressor by its power cord. Keep the power cord away from heat, oil, solvents and sharp edges. If the power cord becomes damaged have it replaced by an authorized service facility.

Check Damaged Parts
Before using the compressor it should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for the correct alignment of moving parts ensuring they do not bind. Check for broken or missing parts and have them replaced or repaired at an authorized service centre. Check any other condition that may affect the operation of the compressor. A guard or any other part of the compressor that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service centre.

Disconnect Compressor
Ensure that the compressor is disconnected from the mains supply and the tank is empty when not in use, before servicing, lubricating or making adjustments to air lines, and when changing accessories such as blades, bits, nails and cutters on air tools.

Avoid Unintentional Starting
Ensure that the switch is in the OFF position before plugging the compressor into the mains supply.

Turning the compressor ON and OFF
Use the red knob on top of the pressure switch to turn the unit on and off. Pull the knob up to turn the compressor on and push the knob in to turn it off. Turning the unit on and off from the mains supply only will result in damage to the motor and void warranty as the pressure switch has an additional function to purge the air trapped in the delivery pipe when the motor is turned off. This minimizes the load on the motor when it is next started.

What Should Be Considered When Selecting a Direct Driven or Belt Driven Air Compressor ?

Use Frequency
If your air compressor sees occasional action, the cost effectiveness and less frequent maintenance requirements of a belt drive make it a solid choice. On the flip side, if you’re cranking up that air compressor on a regular or near continuous basis, direct drive is your go to.

Budget
If you’re on a tight initial budget, a belt drive will work better, giving you a lower starting budget to get your air compressor into operation. However, if you’re concerned about your long term operating budget, a direct drive will have lower maintenance costs down the road, often giving you a lower overall cost over the lifespan of the air compressor.

Maintenace
When minimizing downtime is the name of the game on your production line, direct drive systems take the lead. With fewer maintenance tasks on their to do list, they outshine belt drives that demand more frequent attention. Plus, direct drive systems boast a longer service life, reducing the need for frequent replacements and elevating their reliability compared to their belt drive counterparts. It’s the recipe for a smoother and more dependable operation.

Environment
The choice of air compressor type can be influenced by the environment it’s destined for. Harsh conditions and extreme temperatures are the wild cards that can throw a wrench into the works for certain air compressor types when used regularly in such environments. It’s a crucial factor to weigh in the decision making process.
